The Library holds an extensive collection of historical materials and heritage materials, including books, maps and objects from before 1960. Recent research by the National Library of the Netherlands (KB) has shown that some historical collections may contain hazardous substances, such as arsenic.

The Library is currently examining old books in its collection to determine whether they may contain hazardous substances. It is important to establish how to handle these materials safely.

For borrowers and staff
Hazardous substances are only found in materials from before 1960. These substances are typically harmful only with intense or prolonged contact, or if the materials are damaged or deteriorated. As long as you handle the books with care, they can be safely borrowed, viewed, and used.

Washing hands after use is strongly recommended.

What is the Library doing?
We take this issue seriously and are working with other libraries and experts, such as the KB, to investigate the risks and implement precautionary measures.

  • Collecting information about potential risks.
  • Taking precautions, such as cleaning more frequently and advising handwashing.
  • Raising awareness by providing information.
  • Developing a plan for further research.
