Frequently Asked Questions

Studying and Facilities

  • Can I study in the Library?

It is possible for UvA students and staff to study in the UB Singel, at Science Park and Roeterseiland Campus, but only if you make a reservation in advance. Besides, we ask you to wear a face mask inside the UvA-buildings.

Do you need a study place? Be prepared and read the information on our web page about reverving a study place.

  • Can I print and / or copy in the Library?

UvA staff and students who come by to collect material from the UB Singel can copy and scan this material on site. Printing is only possible if you have reserved a study place in advance. Besides, we ask you to wear a face mask inside the UvA-buildings.

At Science park, P.C. Hoofthuis, the Bushuis, and on the ground floor of the Library Learning Centre (REC H), it is possible for UvA staff and students to print without study place reservation.

For all UvA buildings with printing facilities, please check out the UvA web page about Buildings and Facilities.

  • Can I borrow a Chromebook from the Library?

The regular way of lending Chromebooks for one day is currently not possible. If you urgently need a Chromebook for a longer period, for example for an online exam or because your own laptop is under repair, you can submit a request via the Library contact form. The number of Chromebooks is limited. For those who need a laptop, there is the option to rent one via (with a discount via Surfspot).

  • Do I need to wear a face mask in the library?

At the moment, the UvA urgently advises you to wear face masks in all interior areas (corridors, lifts, halls, etcetera) until you reach your destination. This also applies to the library. Are you sitting behind your workplace? Then you may remove your face mask. Do you prefer to keep it on? Then of course that is allowed.

Borrowing and Returns

  • Can I request and borrow books?

UvA students, staff and non-UvA borrowers can request books via CataloguePlus, and pick them up at several library locations. Non-UvA borrowers can only pick up at the UB Singel and the Allard Pierson Research Room. Note: Materials from the collection of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (Hogeschool van Amsterdam) cannot yet be delivered.

Please take a look at the location overview.

  • Due to corona measures, I am unable to visit the library to return my books. What should I do?

Materials that are not reserved, can be renewed. Please contact us for this via the contact form. For those who are unable to return books at the UB Singel, there is an option to send them to us by post. Please, send them to:

    Universiteitsbibliotheek van Amsterdam
    Postbus 19185
    1000 GD Amsterdam

Some postal services (e.g. DHL) do not deliver to letterboxes (postbussen). In that case, send your package to:

    Universiteit van Amsterdam
    Reference Postbus 19185 (Universiteitsbibliotheek)
    Tafelbergweg 51
    1105 BD Amsterdam

  • What can I do as a non-UvA borrower?

Under non-UvA borrowers are understood: private borrowers, alumni and borrowers from other universities or affiliated institutions.

As a non-UvA borrower, the following is currently possible:

    • Consult the digital collection via a public PC. Reservation in advance is required. This can be done via the contact form of the Library.

In addition, it is not possible for non-UvA borrowers to study in the library or reserve a study place, not even in the University Library Singel.
