Borrowing and Returns

  • Can I request and borrow books?

    UvA students and staff and external borrowers can request printed materials via CataloguePlus and collect materials from different pick-up locations. External borrowers can only collect materials from the University Library Singel.

    The open collections at the various library locations have limited access for external borrowers. Do you urgently need material from the open collections that cannot be requested via CataloguePlus? Please contact us by telephone on (+31)20 525 1405 to make a reservation for an inspection place.

    Heritage materials and special collections can be viewed in the Allard Pierson research room. Reserving a workplace in advance is mandatory.

  • How long does it take to deliver my books?

    Due to the corona period and measures taken, the delivery of material may take longer than you are used to. When the material is ready for you, you will receive a pick-up notification by email.

  • Due to health issues and / or quarantine, I am unable to visit the library to return my books. What should I do?

    Please contact us via the contact form. For those who are unable to return books at the UB Singel, there is an option to send them to us by post. Please, send them to:

    Some postal services (e.g. DHL) do not deliver to p.o. boxes (postbussen). In that case, send your package to:

    Due to the processing time of the mail, it may take some time for the books to be removed from your account.

  • How do I get access to the digital collections?

    UvA students and staff can access digital collections by logging in to CataloguePlus (top right). For some databases it may be necessary to turn on VPN first.

    External borrowers who wish to consult the digital collection can reserve a collection PC in the Singel University Library. Reservations can be made by phone via 020 525 1405.

  • What can I do as an external borrower?

    Under external borrowers are understood: private borrowers, alumni and borrowers from other universities or affiliated institutions.

    External borrowers can again request printed materials via CataloguePlus and collect them at the University Library Singel. Returns are also only possible at the University Library Singel. In addition, external borrowers can view heritage materials and special collections in the Allard Pierson research room. It is mandatory to reserve a workplace in advance via the Allard Pierson website.

    External borrowers who want to consult the digital collection can reserve a collection PC. A reservation can also be made to consult the inspection materials from the open collections on the University Library Singel. In both cases, reservations can be made by telephone on (+31)20 525 1405.

    It is not possible for external borrowers to study in the library or to reserve a study place.
