Can I study in the Library?

Borrowing and Returning

Can I request and borrow books?
UvA students and staff and external borrowers can request printed materials via CataloguePlus and collect materials from different pick-up locations. External borrowers can only collect materials from the University Library Singel.
Heritage materials and special collections can be viewed in the Allard Pierson research room.

How long does it take to deliver my books?
Usually requested materials are ready for you at the desired location within one to two working days. During holidays and weekends there is no delivery of materials. When the material is ready for you, you will receive a pick-up notification by email.

I want to request a book / journal in CataloguePlus, but there is no request option. How do I proceed?
Some of our material can only be consulted on location. Sometimes there are other reasons why material is (temporarily) not available. Read more about non-requestable materials.

Due to health issues, I am unable to visit the library to return my books. What should I do?

How do I get access to the digital collections?
UvA students and staff can access digital collections by logging in to CataloguePlus (top right). For some databases it may be necessary to turn on VPN first.
External borrowers who want to consult the digital collection can use a collection PC at the University Library Singel. These PCs can be found on the first floor, next to the information desk.

Can I request materials from libraries other than the UvA?
It is possible to request materials from other libraries via interlibrary loan (ILL). For borrowing materials from the AUAS, please go to CataloguePlus.

What can I do as an external borrower?
Under external borrowers are understood: private borrowers, alumni and borrowers from other universities or affiliated institutions.
External borrowers can again request printed materials via CataloguePlus and collect them at the University Library Singel. Returns are also only possible at the University Library Singel. In addition, external borrowers can view heritage materials and special collections in the Allard Pierson research room.
External borrowers can consult the digital collection via the collection PCs on the first floor of the University Library Singel (next to the information desk). External borrowers can also visit the open collections at all library locations.
It is not possible for external borrowers to study in the library or to reserve a study place.
