The characteristic staircase was decorated in a palette of colourful shades, while the music of Daft Punk, sung by an enthusiastic choir, filled the space. The acoustics proved to be as impressive as the building itself. This party was not just a celebration; it marked the end of a long and challenging journey, to which many employees and former directors, architects, contractors and interior designers had made a major contribution.
The new University Library had been open to students since 1 September. The UvA wanted to thank everyone involved in the University Library project with an official opening. In his speech, Rector Magnificus Peter-Paul Verbeek reflected on the ambitious and complex construction project, which ultimately led to an astonishing result. Thanks to the perseverance of all those involved, this building has been realised.
The new University Library symbolises the University of Amsterdam: a meeting place for students, lecturers and researchers. In his speech, Carlos Reijnen, director of the UvA/HvA Library, discussed his personal experience with Martinus Nijhoff's poem Awater and the line “Just read it, it doesn't say what it says”. This line is displayed in 24 languages, which are taught at the UvA, on the iconic façade screen. "The phrase invites discovery, exploration and conversation with each other. This is exactly what the new University Library stands for."
The speeches were followed by a live stream of various speakers standing at different locations in the building. A student, a lecturer, a PhD candidate and a University Library employee talked about what this new University Library means to them. The four speakers symbolically placed the last book in the bookcase on stage, after which the official opening moment arrived with a countdown, toasts and music by Maze.
