The UvA/HvA Library holds an extensive collection of historical materials and heritage materials, including books, maps and objects from before 1950. Recent research by the National Library of the Netherlands (KB) has shown that some historical collections may contain hazardous substances, such as arsenic.

Although the UvA/HvA Library has not yet conducted its own research, we suspect, based on the KB's findings, that our collection may also potentially contain such materials. This raises questions about how we can safely handle these collection items.

What does this mean for our borrowers and staff?

For now, there is no cause for concern. The information on potentially hazardous substances is limited to pre-1950 collection materials. The hazardous substances are usually only harmful in case of intensive or prolonged contact, or if the materials are damaged and release dust or particles. Borrowing, viewing and handling our collection materials remains safe, provided with care and attention.

What do we do now?

The Library is taking this issue seriously and is identifying options for precautionary measures and examining its own collections for possible risks. We are collaborating with other libraries and experts in this field, including the KB, in doing so.

  • Collecting information
  • Taking precautionary measures (gloves, more frequent cleaning and hand washing)
  • Raise awareness (information inside and outside the Library)
  • Draw up plan for further research
