Maximum for 2024 (almost) reached
5 October 2023
Due to agreements between universities, including the UvA, and publishers, researchers can publish open access free of charge up to a certain limit. For some publishers, the maximum number of open access articles that can be published free of charge each year has (almost) been reached or is approaching. If your article is accepted for publication between the moment a limit is reached and January 1, 2025, be cautious when you are presented with the option to publish open access. Those who still choose to publish open access may incur additional costs.
Once the maximum is reached, you can of course publish open access through these publishers but no longer for free. In the publication workflow the message that 'your institute (or UNL) reimburses/ covers the costs' will no longer appear. Open access publishing is only possible against payment and you will receive the invoice yourself. Don't want that? Then choose the option 'publish subscription' or 'publish traditionally'.
Please note: only if you have made an agreement in advance with a department or faculty to cover the costs of an open access publication can you request reimbursement afterward. There is no central fund at the university that can be claimed retroactively for open access fees.Articles still freely accessible afterwards
If you have published an article with a publisher in the traditional way, not open access, it will automatically – after an embargo of six months – be made freely accessible via UvA-DARE, the institutional repository. The Library does this automatically for you, pursuant to Section 25fa of the Dutch Copyright Act (Taverne) and the board decision from early last year. For more information, read the Library's Open Access page.
As of 1 January the 2025, Dutch corresponding authors will again be able to make use of the free open access under the agreements with these publishers.
