Basic knowledge of programming is now almost indispensable to conduct further quantitative research using A.I. applications such as machine learning and deep learning. Therefore, there is an increasing demand for researchers, data and marketing analysts who have skills to answer complex questions using R and Python, among others. The programming languages R and Python are the most common languages used in data science to analyse large data sets.
Workshop on Git, Shell and R (16 and 17 January 2023)
The UvA Library, together with the Data Science Centre, offers new Carpentry software workshops for researchers and master's students every semester.
Taking a Carpentry workshop provides you as a researcher with a good foundation to gain skills with programming languages R and Python. During a workshop, you will also learn Unix Shell for data management skills and Git to effectively track and share versions of your work for collaboration.
To share knowledge and strengthen our local Carpentry network, the UvA and VU will jointly organise two Carpentry workshops next semester. Keep an eye on our calendar; we will share more about this in the spring!
The next (free) two-day workshop "Git, Shell and R: the principles of programming" will take place on 16 and 17 January 2023.
Train the trainer
In addition to the Carpentries workshops for basic programming itself, we offer 5 training places per year for UvA researchers to become Certified Carpentry Instructors. This way, you will not only develop your technical and didactic skills but also join a national and global network of researchers. Interested researchers can apply for this at no cost. So, are you energised by teaching and would you like to expand your knowledge, network and skills through The Carpentries?
I thoroughly enjoyed The Carpentries instructor training. The training helped me to refresh my didactic skills. It was a great opportunity to think, discuss and learn about teaching. Moreover, it provides me with a good foundation to teach the Carpentries workshops and teach software and data skills in general. I’m looking forward to applying what I have learned in a workshop.Dr. ir. Joachim Goedhart, assistant professor Faculty of Science/SILS, Carpentry Instructor
