The University of Amsterdam participates in national Read & Publish agreements. A number of these agreements have been renewed and extended this year, offering UvA researchers, besides reading rights, the option to publish open access for free in 11,000 journals by 16 publishers.

With effect from 2022, the following Read & Publish agreements have been renewed or extended:

  • Agreements with Brill, Karger, RSC, Sage and Thieme have been renewed for a three-year term.
  • Agreements with IOS Press and Springer have been extended by a year under the same conditions.
  • Agreements with ACS have been renewed for a four-year term. The complete open access journals from this publisher are no longer part of the agreement.
  • We have entered into a new agreement with BMJ, which is limited to granting reading rights.

The full terms and conditions of the national Read & Publish agreements can be found on openaccess.nl.

National collaboration

In drawing up these agreements, the UvA negotiated not only on reading rights, but also on the possibilities for free open access publishing (without additional costs, in principle). The conditions for free open access publishing may change when an agreement is extended. For example, the number of available journals, the types of articles or the number of publications may change within the agreement. The Read & Publish agreements have resulted from a partnership with the UKB (a partnership of Dutch University Libraries and The Royal Library of the Netherlands) and Universities of the Netherlands (UNL).

Independent agreements

Besides national agreements, the University Library of the University of Amsterdam also independently enters into Read & Publish agreements with publishers.

  • The agreements with John Benjamins, IoP, CoB and Cogitatio have been renewed under the same conditions in 2022.
  • With effect from 2022, a new agreement with Portland Press has been entered into.
  • There are a number of discount schemes for UvA researchers, such as with Springer Open.

If you want to quickly look up whether a specific journal is included in an agreement, you can use the Open Access Journal Browser.

Open Access policy

Entering into Read & Publish agreements is part of the UvA's multi-track policy in the transition to 100% open access. Direct open access publishing with a CC BY licence is one of the possibilities for fulfilling the UvA Open Access Policy.
