The Artis Library is part of the Allard Pierson. The core of the collection is formed by the former book holdings of the Amsterdam society Natura Artis Magistra (Nature is the teacher of art), better known as Artis, founded in 1838. The collecting area covers all fields of natural history: zoology, botany, geology and palaeontology. Modern subjects such as ecology and conservation have since been added.
