In July 2020, the Library introduced Readers in Canvas . Lecturers can use it to create reading lists and/or readers for their courses. A reading list is an online list with links to publications. A reader also includes the PDF files, which students can have printed out. We have evaluated Readers in Canvas and want to further improve this service.

Feedback from lecturers

To make Readers in Canvas even more user-friendly, the Library recently conducted a survey among lecturers. This has generated valuable feedback. A number of points for improvement have been immediately implemented in the user manual, such as:

  • linking a (different) lecturer’s name to an (existing) list;
  • moving items from an existing list to a new one;
  • moving items within a list.

We have also been able to make improvements in our system. For example, you can now add more information, such as the name(s) of the author(s), for each item in the list.

We are also discussing other points for improvement with the supplier.

Fortunately, we also received many positive responses in the survey. Lecturers like the fact that they can work on a reader or list directly in the Canvas environment and that an automatic copyright check is done by the Library. Students seem to like the idea of being able to bring a printed reader to a course or practical.

The average turnaround time for a printed reader is five working days for the copyright check and five working days for the printing by Canon. Lecturers will need to take this turnaround time into account when preparing their courses.
