UvA researchers can still have publications, that have not previously been published open access, made accessible, so that no one will run into a paywall when perusing research published at the UvA.

This only requires filling in an online form once. The Library will take care of the rest.

Background

In 2015 article 25fa was added to the Dutch Copyright Act; the so called ‘amendement Taverne’. Based on this article, a short scientific work – which has not previously been published open but in a subscription journal – can after some time nonetheless be made freely accessible by the author.

Pilot succeeded

Several researchers of the UvA participated in a national pilot last year which resulted in making a large share of publications freely accessible. This was facilitated by the University Library (UB). The pilot was a success and the tested principles on making the publications accessible were implemented by all VSNU universities. By now more than 200 researchers of the UvA are using their right and almost 1500 publications have been made freely accessible.

How does it work?

With the online agreement you can give the Library permission to make – based on article 25fa Dutch Copyright Act – the publishers version (VoR) of your at the UvA published, and to be published, short scientific works freely accessible in the university repository UvA-DARE six months after online publication. They can then be read freely by scientists and the public around the world.

After permission has been granted, the University Library checks Pure to determine which of your publications can be made freely accessible within the scope of the article. The focus will initially be on journal articles published from 2015 onwards. Older journal articles and other short works – edited chapters, conference papers and (scientific) case notes – will follow (if applicable) in the course of the year.
