This workshop introduces Language Models (LLMs) and their applications in Information Extraction for academic research. Participants will gain hands-on experience with entity recognition and relation extraction techniques using Python and the Hugging Face Transformers library. The session covers state-of-the-art information extraction methods and guides participants in training a small language model on domain-specific texts to extract meaningful information.

For whom?

All UvA-researchers can apply for this workshop, with priority to members of the UvA Data Science Centre. Interested MA students are also welcome. It is required that you have some basic comfortability using Python. 

Learning goals

  • Understand the role of LLMs in information extraction.
  • Apply techniques for entity recognition and information extraction.
  • Gain insight into state-of-the-art IE methods and challenges.
  • Train and evaluate their own small model for domain-specific IE tasks.

Prerequisites

  • Knowledge: basic Python is necessary to apply techniques presented in this workshop.
  • Hardware: bring a laptop with internet.
  • Software: Google account, Python.

Workshop details 

This workshop is offered at no cost. Lunch, coffee and tea is included. Due to the university policy to reduce waste, you will have to bring your own cup for beverages.
