Introduction to Programming with Python, Unix Shell, and Git

The demand for data-driven research to address complex issues is on the rise. The most common programming languages for data analysis are Python and R. If you are looking to begin with Python, then this 4-day workshop is tailored for you.

From Tuesday the 4th to Friday the 7th of June, the Library in collaboration with the Vrije Universiteit will offer a course of 4 half days for researchers and master's students from UvA and VU. The course aims to provide a foundational understanding of programming with Python, Unix Shell, and Git.

The course material is based on The Carpentries, a global organization of researchers, programmers, and knowledge workers who provide accessible instruction in data and software skills to their peers. 

This course will cover the following topics

  • Programming with Python 

  • Unix Shell 

  • GitHub 

No prior experience is required. Participants will receive links to download open-source software before the workshop begins.

Date and time: Tuesday 4, Wednesday 5, Thursday 6 and Friday 7 June, 09.30 - 14.30.

Please note that lunch is not included, so bring your own lunch. We will take care of coffee and tea.

Upon successful completion, participants will be awarded a SURF Edubadge that can be shared on your LinkedIn or CV.

This workshop is offered free of charge. In case of oversubscription, selection will be based on background and motivation. By May 29, you will receive confirmation of your participation.
