Violence against women and girls is a problem all over the world. At least one woman in three has experienced violence in her life, which means that one billion women and girls have been subjected to physical, sexual or psychological violence. This happens not only far away, but also close by, at home and at the university.

In order to draw attention to this subject, the United Nations has designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The OTW campaign, in which more than 100 countries are participating, kicks off on this day and ends on 10 December. These are the ‘16 Days of Activisim against gender-based violence’, internationally and in the Netherlands.

Increasing knowledge

The UvA takes its role seriously concerning inclusion and aims to provide a healthy and safe university environment. It sees itself as an integral partner in increasing knowledge of and raising awareness about violence against women and girls. The role of the UvA is to educate and continue to call attention to this subject.

Last year, the Bridge building was lit up bright orange for an evening and the Chief Diversity Officer (CDO) team, including their partner Our Bodies Our Voice (OBOV), organised various substantive workshops to discuss the theme of violence against women. Because the coronavirus measures have made organising meetings and events difficult, this year the UvA is participating by hoisting OTW flags.
