In the first edition of What’s next? we dive into the housing crisis. How did it happen that you can’t afford a home? Together with journalist Maaike Schoon, we look for answers to that question. How is it that house prices have exploded so dramatically in recent decades, and is there still a way out? Drawing on academic knowledge, we look not only at the causes but also at what needs to happen next.

Programme

We will talk with journalist Maaike Schoon about her newly published book Waarom jij geen huis kunt betalen (“Why You Can’t Afford a Home”) and then continue the conversation with UvA researcher Wouter van Gent about how the housing crisis came about and what it means for you. The evening will conclude with Krish Raghav, who designed the game Don't Get Your Hopes Up. In this game, you step into the shoes of a tenant looking for an affordable home in Amsterdam and experience how impossible that mission can sometimes feel.

This programme is a Dutch language event.

About the series What's next?

How can scientific insights help with practical life questions? What's next? is a new programme series in the University Library with programmes on major themes that young adults are facing. Each edition we explore questions around one theme – work, housing, love, money or health – using insights from UvA and AUAS researchers and alumni. We reflect on what science has to say about these topics, but we also offer practical tools that help answer the question: how do I survive after graduation?
