Visitors not affiliated to the UvA as either students or staff are also very welcome in all UvA libraries. The opening hours vary for each library. In the University Library at Singel 425 and in Library Learning Centres different hours apply for staff, students and alumni on the one hand and visitors on the other hand.
If you wish to request and consult publications from the closed stacks, or borrow publications, you need a library card. If you do not yet have one and do not live (close to) Amsterdam, please request a library card first and then send an email. In this mail, please mention your personal data (name, address, telephone number, email address and date of birth). You will receive a preliminary card number. Read more about borrowing from other libraries via the UvA.
If you wish to borrow from different libraries in Amsterdam, it may be advantageous to buy an AdamNet card for €45 per year. This card entitles you to a library card from the UvA library, the Public Library Amsterdam, the VU Library, the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica, the Library Hogeschool INHOLLAND Amsterdam/Diemen, and the libraries of the Hogeschool van Amsterdam.
The University Library at Singel 425 is open from Monday - Friday, 8:30 - 18:00, to anyone with a valid library card. During the evenings and weekends, the University Library is accessible to UvA and HvA students, staff and alumni only.
The only exception to this rule is that the circulation room is open during the evenings and weekends to anyone with a valid library card and a notification that a requested book is ready for that user to be checked out.
For access to the other UvA libraries you do not need a library card. Each library has its own opening hours.
If you are not a UvA student or member of staff, you can use the general access PCs in the library to search UvA CataloguePlus, the UvA catalogue or databases. These PCs do not provide access to the internet.
Guests have several options for using the wireless network at the UvA.
In all libraries there are power outlets to facilitate the use of laptops.
UvA CataloguePlus and the UvA catalogue are freely accessible via the internet. If you wish to link through to our electronic resources, for example to articles in e-journals, you will encounter a prohibition sign or a log-in screen. These resources are accessible only within the Library, via the general access PCs .
And finally, some websites give access to academic open access resources (PDF).
There are photocopy machines in all UvA libraries. Printing is limited to articles from our electronic resources, available via the general access pc's. You can pay by means of a library pass with ample deposit.
A number of printing/copying machines in various libraries function also as scanners. In the University Library at Singel and in the printing area of the P.C. Hoofthuis Library, there is a stand-alone bookscanner with a USB port, which is available to everybody. Scans must be saved on a USB memory stick. Scanning is free.
Museums, libraries and similar institutions can apply to the Library for loans of objects for their exhibitions. The rules and procedures of the Special Collections are valid for the whole Library.
