If you are not affiliated to the UvA or HvA but wish to borrow publications from the Library, you may request a library card provided you have:
You will be notified by email when your Library card is ready. In general, it will take two working days.
The library card is free to students of Dutch universities, the Open University and the Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten, on showing a valid student ID card, proof of enrolment for the current academic year and a valid ID.
The library card is free to staff of Dutch universities, the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences (KNAW), the Royal Library (KB) and the Higher Art Education in Amsterdam on showing a recent pay slip and a valid ID.
UvA alumni are also entitled to a free library card, on showing their membership card of the Amsterdamse Universiteits-Vereniging (AUV) and a valid ID.
Please note: the library card does not entitle you to access from outside the UvA to our databases and e-journals. These can only be accessed from one of the general access library PCs.
To request books from the closed stacks for consultation within the library, you need a temporary library card (€ 15). This card does not allow for taking books out of the building. The temporary library card can be requested online. You must have a valid ID.
If you wish to borrow from different libraries in Amsterdam, it may be advantageous to buy an AdamNet card for €45 per year. This card entitles you to a free library card from the UvA library, the Public Library Amsterdam, the VU Library, the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica, the Library Hogeschool INHOLLAND Amsterdam/Diemen, and the libraries of the Hogeschool van Amsterdam.
If you are a member of another Dutch library and are interested in a publication from the UvA collections, you may submit an Interlibrary Loan (ILL) request at your own library to have the publication sent to that library. For information about the cost involved, please inquire at your own library.
Two months before your library card expires, you will be notified by email and informed on how to renew the card. As a paying cardholder you may pay by PIN at the University Library information desk at Singel 425.
Please, notify the Library of any change of address, email address, name etc.
In case of loss or theft, please block your library card and request a replacement card as soon as possible:
A replacement card costs €5, unless you can show a police report of the theft.
