On Location

In the current situation, the locations of the Library are only accessible to UvA students and staff. Opening hours vary per location.

General Access Computers

In most UvA libraries there are general access computers to consult the UvA catalogue and our electronic resources. They do not provide free access to the Internet. Their use is free and no log-in is required.

It is possible to

  • Download to a USB stick from a number of databases.
  • Send search results to an email address (some PDF files can be sent to a UvA email address only).
  • Print with a prepaid printcard, payable at the desks with a library pass with deposit.

Locations with General Access Computer

You'll find these PCs in the University Library at Singel (9), Library Learning Centre Roeterseiland Campus (3), Science Library (1), Special Collections (4), Law Library (11) and P.C. Hoofthuis Library (4).

In the Medical Library of AMC (Amsterdam Medical Centre) there are no general access computers, but external visitors can get a temporary log-in account from the library desk.

Would you like to borrow material from the library? UvA students and staff can use their student or staff card for this purpose. Non-UvA borrowers need a library card to request and consult publications from the closed stacks or borrow publications. Read more about borrowing from the UvA and borrowing from other libraries.

Study Spaces

The UvA Library offers a wide range of study places on each campus, with more than 4,500 spots to choose from. You can study by yourself or in a group, in both open and closed rooms. All study places are equipped with wireless internet and easily accessible power outlets. The collaborative areas have whiteboards and/or screens.

Due to the corona virus, the Library offers a limited number of study spaces. To make studying in the University Library as safe as possible for all of us, we have laid out a number of rules. Read about booking a study space.

Studying during exam periods

The study spaces are very busy during examination periods. The UvA Library therefore offers extended opening hours and additional study places during these times. For information about additional study places, keep an eye on the location page, the on-campus information displays and the messages on our social media channels.

Access policy | Remember to bring your card!

During evenings and weekends, study places at the University Library on the Singel and the Library Learning Centre on the Roeterseiland Campus can only be accessed with a valid UvA/AUAS student ID card or library card. Students and staff from other universities cannot access these areas during evenings and weekends in exam periods.

The UvA Library makes every effort to provide a sufficient number of high-quality study places. If you have any suggestions for improving the study places or if you would like to submit a complaint, please contact us via Ask the Library.
