In the study centres and libraries, there is wireless internet (WiFi) for students and staff with a UvAnetID. For information on how to connect to one of the wireless networks, see the webpages of ICTS Services. By making a connection to the UvA WiFi portal you can always be sure that the connection is secure.
For visitors from other educational establishments, there is the eduroam network. For instructions on how to use it, see the website of your own organisation.
Those who are not affiliated to an eduroam organisation can work with the UvA Open WiFi network. This is the slowest and least secure option.
Is it crowded in the study centre? Did you forget to bring your own laptop or is your battery empty? At the information desks of UB Singel, Science Park Library, Library Learning Centre Roeterseiland and P.C. Hoofthuis Library, UvA students can borrow a Chromebook for one day (on presenting your student ID card). The Chromebook must be returned before closing time.
Borrowing a Chromebook is free of charge. For the rest the Library Regulations hold. You can log in on the Chromebook with your UvAnetID or with your Google account.
At the information desk of UB Singel you can borrow a lock for your laptop for one day, free of charge. This way you prevent baddies from making off with your laptop. The lock consists of a cable: one end you link up to a Windows laptop, the other to a table or pillar. The Library cannot accept liability for loss of property.
At UB Singel, Library Roeterseiland and the Science Park Library, there is a weekly ‘Laptop clinic’ specially for UvA students. Together with an expert from ICTS, we can help you with UvA related laptop problems.
Subjects which come up, for example, are printing from your laptop, problems with wireless internet or with the databases and e-journals via UvA VPN.
