Shahidzadeh’s research group focuses on novel experimental approaches for a better understanding of flow and phase transitions in complex liquids combined with the control of crystal nucleation and growth. The aim of her research is to understand and control crystallisation by combining her expertise on crystallisation and soft matter with different fields where interesting physical chemistry questions are still unresolved such as the preservation and conservation of cultural heritage and artworks, civil engineering, and the food industry.

As an UvA professor, Shahidzadeh will represent the UvA in a number of national and international organisations in the field, and her group will continue to foster interdisciplinary projects in both fundamental porous media resesearch as well as research applied to various other fields where crystallisation plays a major role.

At the UvA, Shahidzadeh contributes to physics teaching programmes, in particular within the BSc and MSc programmes Physics and Astronomy, and the track Advanced Matter and Energy Physics (AMEP) therein. She is also a lecturer at the UvA faculty of Humanities for the MSc ‘Conservation and Restoration’.

About Shahidzadeh
Since 2011, Shahidzadeh has been an associate professor at the Van der Waals-Zeeman Institute, within the UvA’s Institute of Physics. From 1999 to 2011, she was a (senior) scientist at the Laboratoire Navier/ IFSTTAR, a position she obtained in a nationwide competition of the French Ministry for Sustainable Development at Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussées. She received her PhD in 1996 from the Université Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris and did a post-doc at the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris.

Shahidzadeh is a member of the board of directors of the Interpore foundation and the scientific advisory board of the Netherlands Institute for Conservation, Art and Science (NICAS). She is also a member of the scientific committee of the International Droplets congress, and founder of the successful series of biannual CRYSPOM conferences on crystallisation in porous media. She is involved in the organisation of the 50th anniversary congress of the Dutch Association of Crystal Growth to take place in 2022. She is also a member of the Editorial Board of the journal CRYSTALS.
