Prof. Marcel Worring (1965) has been appointed professor of Multimedia Analytics at the Faculty of Science of the University of Amsterdam.
Worring conducts research on access to large-scale multimedia data sources. He follows an approach that links automatic analysis of the data to interactive visualisations. He searches for methods to provide insight into unstructured data (images, text, social media) in combination with structured data (websites, company data, knowledge bases, demographic indicators) in order to find relationships, patterns, trends and structures. The central question is how computers can automatically learn from all these information sources - with their different quality and properties - and how optimal synergy can be achieved between computers’ ability to analyse large amounts of data and the analytical qualities and knowledge of experts.
As professor of Multimedia Analytics, Worring will give fresh impetus to his research into intelligent technologies and their applications in a wide range of fields such as medical applications, business innovation, cultural heritage, and safety. He will also teach in the Artificial Intelligence and Data Science programmes.
Worring has been working at the UvA since 1993. Since 2014, he has been a professor of Data Science for Business Analytics at the Faculty of Economics and Business. In addition, he is an associate professor at the Informatics Institute. Worring is co-founder of the Dutch Innovation Center for Artificial Intelligence (ICAI) and director of ICAI-Amsterdam. In addition, he is scientific director of the Dutch National Police Lab AI and the AI for Medical Imaging Lab. From 2016 – 2019, Worring was director of the Informatics Institute. Previously, he was an associate director of Amsterdam Data Science, a partnership between UvA, HvA, CWI and VU Amsterdam focused on interdisciplinary ICT research in data science.
