Professor D. Curtin (1960) has been appointed Professor of European Law at the Faculty of Law at the University of Amsterdam (UvA).

Professor D. Curtin (1960) has been appointed Professor of European Law at the Faculty of Law at the University of Amsterdam (UvA).

Deirdre Curtin studied Law at University College Dublin and Trinity College Dublin. After working for several years as Legal Secretary (Référandaire) to the Irish judge at the Court of Justice of the European Communities in Luxemburg, she obtained her Doctoral degree from the National University of Ireland. Curtin was appointed Professor of Law of International Organisations at the Faculty of Law at Utrecht University (UU) as well as the Director of the Europa Institute at the same university. In 2003, she took up the Chair of International and European Governance at the multidisciplinary Utrecht School of Governance (USG) at the UU.

For many years, Curtin was attached to the College of Europe in Bruges as a visiting professor. She is a member of many national and international committees. Between 2004 and 2008 she served as Research Leader of the international and multidisciplinary CONNEX (Connecting Excellence on European Governance) network of excellence, financed by the European Union's Sixth Framework Funds.

In 2003, Curtin was elected member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and in 2007 was awarded the Spinoza Prize - the highest Dutch distinction in the field of scientific research - by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) for her pioneering contribution to European and constitutional law and governance. In September 2008, the University College Dublin awarded her an honorary Doctorate in Law.

Curtin has published widely in leading international journals and reference works. Her latest book, Executive Power in the European Union. Law, Practices and Constitutionalism, is forthcoming (Oxford University Press, 2009).

In addition to her professorship at the UvA, Curtin continues at the University of Utrecht as Professor of International and European Governance one day a week.
