Dentistry also maintained its top position this year, again ranked 2nd in the world. There are also top 20 positions for Sociology, Linguistics, Development Studies, Geography, Anthropology, and Library & Information Management. Sociology is in 10th place, Psychology in 15th, Linguistics in 16th, Development Studies in 17th and Geography in 18th place. Anthropology and Library & Information Management are both at 19.

Various other UvA subject areas also reached the top 50 in the QS Ranking: Politics & International Studies (26) , Social Policy & Administration (28), Medicine (30), Law (34), History (36), Philosophy (40), English Language & Literature (43), Computer Science & Information Systems (45), Modern Languages (49), Physics & Astronomy (50).
 

Top 100

Outside the top 50, universities are ranked by group instead of individually. The UvA subject areas listed in the group 51-100 are: Theology, Divinity & Religious Studies, Biological Sciences, Mathematics, Accounting & Finance, Business & Management Studies, Economics & Econometrics, Education, and Statistics & Operational Research.

About the ranking

QS ranks subject areas on the basis of four criteria: employer reputation, academic reputation, citations and H-index. The latter criterion links the impact (number of citations) to the scope (number of publications) of a researcher’s work.

QS published their university-wide World University Rankings on 19 June 2019, in which the UvA placed 64th.
