On Friday, 23 January the municipality made two documents regarding the implementation of the building plans for the University Library at the Binnengasthuis premises available for perusal.
In February 2014, the UvA submitted a physical environment permit application based on the provisional design for the University Library. That design is not fully in line with the current zoning plan for 'Postcode Area 1012', which is why the zoning plan will have to be partially revised. The municipality has arranged a public information and participation evening on 15 May 2014 on the revision of the Postcode 1012 zoning plan.
The draft ‘First Revision Postcode Area 1012’ zoning plan and the draft physical environment permit for the implementation of the building plans are simultaneously available for perusal from 23 January. You can find more information about this on the municipality website.
In its application for the physical environment permit the UvA included the renovation of two nationally listed buildings on the Binnengasthuis premises: the Tweede Chirurgische Kliniek and the Zusterhuis. The buildings will be interconnected to form a single library and the patio will be covered by a glass roof, creating a large atrium. The parking grounds on the corner of Binnengasthuisstraat and Nieuwe Doelenstraat will house a new building section for the University Library.
The University Library has been designed by MVSA Architects and Architectenbureau J. van Stigt. The design incorporated respect for the historical building elements on the one hand and the inclusion of modern facilities necessary for a contemporary university library on the other.
