On 16 September, district councillor Ilse Griek and UvA Economics and Business Economics student Maya Moreno ‘drove’ the first pile of the new University Library in the presence of local residents, university staff and other parties involved in the construction. Over 600 piles still remain to be driven into the ground.

The new University Library is being built on the former Binnengasthuis site and is the first in a series of construction projects to be carried out as part of the University Quarter in the coming years.

After the monumental Second Surgical Clinic and the former convent – which together form the heart of the new University Library – have been stripped of asbestos, cables and pipes, new foundations and a basement structure will be installed in the months ahead. This will be followed by the dismantling and installation of the roof between the buildings. The new University Library is expected to open in 2022.

UvA returns to its birthplace

Jan Lintsen, member of the Executive Board of the UvA, said he was proud of the start of the new library’s construction: ‘390 years after the UvA was founded, we are returning to UvA's birthplace with the new University Library after a challenging construction operation. The University Library will become an important meeting place for both students and lecturers, though local residents and people from all over the city are also welcome.’

District councillor Ilse Griek: ‘The construction of the new University Library shows that the University and municipality are working closely together to improve the quality of life on the former Binnengasthuis site. The UvA is taking charge of the renovation of the buildings and the municipality is responsible for the outdoor space. Together, we are making it an attractive area once again.’
