The new University Library is the heart of the University Quarter. The University Quarter is the last campus after the Science Park and Roeterseiland Campus that the university is renovating. BG 2 and Special Collections were renovated in recent years. Following the Library, BG3, BG5 and the Oudemanhuispoort will be renovated. If you would like to know more about campus development and plans, please visit www.campus.uva.nl. Ultimately, the University Library will be surrounded by various UvA education and faculty buildings.
Although the area has been UvA property for many decades, it was originally a cloister. Various buildings subsequently served as a hospital and an academic hospital, including BG5, BG (children's clinic) and the Tweede Chirurgische Kliniek and the Zusterhuis. The latter two buildings (Vendelstraat 2) will house the University Library, with the addition of a new wing.
The new library will be easily accessible by bicycle (and have an underground parking facility) as well as tram and metro.
