The UvA Library gives access to several pre-selected resources such as subject specific databases (see sample below) and e-journals.
Search the databases (and Google Scholar) preferably using ‘Advanced search’. ‘Advanced search’ allows you to better translate your research question into a search string (a combination of search terms) suited to find the information you need with the resource you are using.
SocINDEX
Journal articles, books, conference papers and dissertations in the field of sociology and related disciplines.
UvA CataloguePlus
Books and journals articles on all topics, available online (off campus access possible) or for loan at the UvA Library.
Web of Science
Peer reviewed publications (mostly journal articles) on all topics. Use ‘Basic search’ rather than ‘Advanced search’ here.
Worldwide Political Science Abstracts
Journal articles, books, conference papers and dissertations in the field of political science, international relations, law and public administration & policy.
The Sociology collection is located at the Library Learning Centre Roeterseilandcampus, the library for the Faculty of Economics and Business and the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences.
Stefano Giani is the Subject Librarian for Sociology and provides support to students and staff in their study and research. Please contact him for (among others):
Individual assistance
Students working on assignments (paper, thesis), professors teaching courses or researchers working on projects (articles, PhD-thesis) may at all times contact the Subject Librarian if they need help with any of the following:
purchase suggestions
search skills, literature searches and (systematic) reviews
All workshops are aimed at developing (a subset of) information literacy skills within an academic environment. The instructions are tailored both to subjects relevant to the study program and to the knowledge level of the participants (BA, MA, PhD, staff). Topics which can be addressed during a workshop include:
tuning the choice of the search tool to the query
finding a specific (online) book or journal article
The decision as to whether the Subject Librarian and/or the (seminar) supervisors will teach the Workshops, or if the Library will only provide the instruction materials, is taken in consultation between the Subject Librarian and the supervisors.
