Cities are growing worldwide, including Amsterdam. This growth is accompanied by urgent challenges involving climate, security, affordable housing, health and more. How can we make cities better? WeMakeThe.City, a festival organised by Pakhuis de Zwijger, will see experts and Amsterdam residents embark on a five-day search for answers. The University Quarter features prominently in the afternoon programme on 22 June. What is more, you are invited!
The University Quarter, the future home of the Humanities, will take shape over the next few years. Together, the University of Amsterdam, the City of Amsterdam and urban planning consultancy West 8 are working on a comprehensive master plan. This comprehensive master plan involves not just these three parties, but it also includes local residents and entrepreneurs, the University Quarter’s many future students and UvA staff, of course. What can we do to ensure that all these users come and live as a community in this little piece of Amsterdam while maintaining the quality of life?
Participants will embark on an expedition to the area and open the lid on the plans of West 8. They will be able to give their views of the plan from a number of perspectives in working sessions.
University Quarter Programme 22 June
The programme starts at 13.30 and continues untill 17.00 hrs. The working sessions are:
- Meet & Greet on the Binnengasthuis premises led by Anna Dekker of Placemakers and Hans Karssenberg of STIPO. How and where will the various (future) users of the public space meet up?
- Future-proof Heritage, led by Paul Morel of Stadsherstel Amsterdam with the cooperation of André Winder of the Listed Buildings and Archaeology department of the City of Amsterdam.
How do we green an area with many listed buildings?
- Tabula Scripta, led by Jarrik Ouburg of HOH Architecten and ARIAS.
The University Quarter is not an empty plot of land. How can existing, well-known spots blend in seamlessly with new developments? We answer this question by turning to the recently renovated building of the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) on Oude Turfmarkt.
