Preliminary asbestos investigation BG13/14

5 February 2018

This month, the University of Amsterdam (UvA) is starting its preliminary investigation into asbestos in BG13a/14. These activities are in preparation of the construction work for the University Library to be built in this location and opened in 2021.

Asbestos investigations are a stage in construction work required by law if there have been renovations prior to 1993. This is the case for buildings BG13a and BG14. Certified contractor AM&P Milieu BV will carry out the investigation for the UvA in a preliminary phase followed by an in-depth phase. Any removal of asbestos will take place once both phases have been completed.

Phase 1: preliminary investigation

This phase, which runs from 6 February to mid February, will start with a visual inventory and ‘moderately destructive’ interventions. This involves identifying and taking samples of any (potentially) suspect sources. The samples will be analysed to determine whether these sources actually contain asbestos. The results of the investigation will be used in phase 2.

Phase 2: in-depth investigation

If the samples turn up asbestos, or if phase 1 fails to provide a complete picture of the situation, there will be a ‘destructive’ investigation. This will involve such activities as opening up floors, (cavity) walls or roof structures.

What impact will it have on you?

The preliminary investigation (phase 1) will take place both in the interior and on the exterior of the buildings on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and will not lead to any disruptions. An aerial work platform will be used for work on the facade. If an in-depth investigation is required (phase 2), this may result in a degree of noise nuisance, depending on the nature of the findings from phase 1. We will inform you about this as soon as we have more information.

The investigations will not affect your health in any way. AM&P will be meticulous in its implementation of both phases so as to avoid the release of any asbestos.
