Open-access deal with Springer continued
Result in the first year: 2000 articles
The open-access deal between the VSNU organisations, of which the UvA is one, and Springer publishers has been renewed. In its first year, almost 2000 articles by Dutch researchers were published in open access, 229 of which were from the UvA. These can now be read by anyone, without needing a subscription or special privileges. The number of journals in which can be published (the Springer OpenChoice program) has also grown, and is now 1684.
The deal was made in January 2015 for one year. Since then the publisher has asked corresponding authors of accepted articles to which organisation they are affiliated. If they select UvA (including AMC), then Springer and the UvA Library will verify this. Verification takes place during the production process of the article and does not take extra time.
Open access condition for funding
More and more often, publication in open access is a condition made by funders of academic research (NWO, Horizon 2020). Therefore,it is increasingly important to find out at an early stage what arrangement the intended publisher has concerning online publishing. For a large number of journals the SHERPA/RoMEO site provides information on the publishers' policies.
